I approach therapy using a blend of techniques and perspectives depending on what is the right fit for you and the issues you want to work on. Some of the theoretical approaches I draw from include:
Exploring how your thoughts, feelings and actions interact and effect each other. Changing any one of these can impact the others. For example, if you change your thoughts about a certain aspect of your life, you can influence your behaviors in that area, making it easier to act in ways that help you feel better. Discover what beliefs you hold that serve and support you and which beliefs hinder your progress and happiness. This work often includes practicing new thought patterns and behaviors to understand what changes will work for you.
A set of skills that bring us into the present moment more effectively. Mindfulness is often about choosing what we pay attention to in a purposeful and conscious way, both in our internal and external worlds. Mindfulness work can increase our self-awareness in terms of our thoughts, actions and feelings. Mindfulness practices can also be powerful skills to help manage difficult emotions, reduce stress and increase the joy and gratitude we experience.
Rediscovering your inner wisdom and increasing self-awareness to create more helpful ways of coping. Sometimes this is where we see connections and influences from our past that are affecting us now. Sometimes the insights are more immediate and we realize our current actions have different motivations or sources that we realized. There can often be a powerful spiritual component in this work. The better we understand ourselves, the more compassion we can have for ourselves. It is from this place that we can often enact the greatest change and healing.
Body and Breath Work
Learning to read and respond to our bodily cues that are tied to our emotional life. Breath work is an excellent approach to better coping with the stress and fear in your life.
Interpersonal Therapy techniques – relationship focused work
Exploring significant relationships and how these increase or decrease our sense of well-being and mental health symptoms. Creating new ways of interacting in the important relationships in your life to increase satisfaction and support healthy coping skills.
